Population Development Strategy
The outputs of population and development component contribute to the following UNDAF outcome: the human rights of children, women and vulnerable groups are progressively fulfilled within the foundations of strengthened democratic governance.
Output 1: Population and gender concerns integrated into national and sectoral plans
It contributes to better understanding of discriminatory provisions towards women and girls in national policies and strategies and raise awareness about the importance of gender and reproductive rights. Under this output support is being provided for data collection and analysis for focused studies related to harmful practices such as early marriage, dowry, gender-based violence etc. and documentation of these issues. This also support dialogues on population, studies, strategies on population, gender and development concerns, dissemination of common understanding, preparation of plans and their implementation. UNFPA facilitates the government process in taking corrective measures against discriminatory practices. Other operations research on demand based RH financing, policy research/studies supported by DPs also contribute to this component. UNFPA is also extending technical support to the Government in the preparation and implementation of action plans for population and other necessary policies. Sensitisation and necessary orientation workshops is being organised both at national and regional levels to facilitate implementation of action plans.
UNFPA is being supporting inclusion of population and RH concerns into national and sectoral development plans through developing capacity of the policy planners/officials and through policy advocacy with relevant stakeholders. Training /workshop on population and development activities are being organised in support of these activities.
Output 2: Improved analysis and utilization of data disaggregated by age, sex, economic status and location.
This output improves understanding of demographic trends, including the determinants of TFR, understanding of links between RH and poverty vice-versa. It contributes towards strengthening national capacity in collecting and analyzing data and formulating policies that realizes the goals and targets of the ICPD, MDG, PRSP and SWAp. Support to Bureau of Statistics (BBS) for production of quality data, policy formulation, digitised enumeration mapping, institutional capacity building is being continued. Support to the Department of Population Sciences, University of Dhaka is being continued to build national capacity for teaching and research. This component will produce reader friendly fact sheets on different policy issues and theme papers based on the State of the World Population Report highlighting Bangladesh situation and other studies/research. UNFPA will support the Government to identify gender gaps and limitations in the 2001 census and will take corrective measures for 2011 census.
