UNFPA in Bangladesh
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has been working in partnership with the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh since 1974 through technical advisory services and commodity support. So far, the organization has completed six country programme cycles while it is currently carrying out its seventh country programme (2006- 2010).
During the timespan from the first country programme cycle (1974 -1979) to the sixth one (2003-2010), the organization has grown from strength to strength not only from the perspective of financial terms but also from the programmatic point of views. While the organization spent US$10 million for the first country programme cycle, it spent US$ 18 million during the sixth country programme. Most importantly, during the years UNFPA has gradually grown in terms of programmatic innovations and ideas leading to the growth of partnership with the government in various aspects of programme related issues of population and development that include training, quality, accessibility and participation.
Unlike its financial support for the Population Programme during the first two programme cycles, UNFPA put more emphasis on women's health during its third country progarmme by strengthening the institutional capacity of the MCH/FP service delivery of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) through the provision of technical support and training. During its fourth country programme, the organization put more importance on the improvement of the quality and accessibility of integrated MCH/FP services as well as community participation and training. The sixth country programme of UNFPA was tuned to the programmes of other donors as well as to the Health and Population Sectoral Strategy of the Government of Bangladesh so that all activities of the stakeholders converge to contribute towards the goal of the sector. The programme was also synchronized with the Programme of Action (POA) untaken by the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) held at Cario in 1994.
