Gender
The output of the gender component contributes to the following UNDAF outcome: societal changes are realized to reduce discriminatory practices and to pursue equity and empowerment for women and girls.
Output: Rights of women and girls promoted and gender equity enhanced.
This component addresses gender equality and women's empowerment through dialogue with policy-makers and media personnel for involvement of women in decision-making and participation in political bodies. Support is being provided to address issues like discriminatory legislative and policy provisions and practices against women and girls. Sensitisation of opinion leaders is being done in a culturally sensitive manner so they emerge as advocates for gender equality and speak against VAW. VAW is being addressed by providing training to the service providers in MCWCs and other SDPs and law enforcing agencies. Community based interventions are being undertaken in partnership with NGOs and CBOs for strengthening related BCC activities in two selected districts.
Particular attention is being given to disadvantaged women working in garment factories and tea plantations to train them on RH, RR including HIV/AIDS prevention. This programme is being linked with the Micro credit programmes of NGOs and related programmes of other UN agencies. In order to bring about a positive attitudinal change and inhabit behavioural practice among the mass on gender issues/RR/RH and prevention of HIV/AIDS, community mobilization are being done through several mass communication methods (e.g. community group meetings, folk song, film shows, orientation and training).
