Q. What does UNFPA stand for?
A. UNFPA was established in 1969 as the United Nations Fund for Population Activities. In 1987, the Economic and Social Council decided to rename it the United Nations Population Fund, but to retain the original abbreviation-acronym.
Q. What is UNFPA’s goal?
A. UNFPA aims to ensure the right of all individuals, especially women, to develop to their fullest potential. To enjoy this right, women need access to information and services on reproductive health including family planning and sexual health to make informed and voluntary choices and decisions. Central to the work of UNFPA is to make this a reality.
Q. What is UNFPA’s mission?
A. UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is an international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. We support countries in using population data for policies and programmes to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV/AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect. UNFPA – because everyone counts.
Q. Does UNFPA promote abortion?
A. No. The programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development held in Cairo, Egypt, in 1994 states that abortion should not be promoted as a method of family planning. UNFPA fully subscribes to this and does not provide support for abortion services. We work to prevent abortion through family planning, and to help countries provide services for women suffering from the complications of unsafe abortion.
Q. Does reproductive health education to adolescents encourage sexual activity?
A. No. Studies show that providing adolescents with information and services on reproductive and sexual health promotes responsible attitudes and behavior leading to well being of the adolescents.
Q. What is maternal mortality?
A. Maternal mortality refers to the death of women while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and the site of the pregnancy. The death can be a result of any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management.
Q. What is maternal morbidity?
A. Maternal morbidity refers to serious disease, disability or physical damage such as fistula, caused by pregnancy related complications.
Q. What is Fistula?
A. An injury in the birth canal that allows leakage from the bladder or rectum into the vagina leaving a woman permanently incontinent, often leading to isolation and exclusion from the family and community. This can be prevented by skilled attendants at birth. It can also be treated by medical interventions.
Q. What is Total Fertility Rate (TFR)?
A. Total Fertility Rate (TFR) refers to total number of children that per woman gives birth during her reproductive lifetime.
Q. What is Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (CPR)?
A. Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (CPR) is the sustained use of the contraceptive methods by men and women of reproductive age.
